Why Do People Need Crown Lengthening and Could It Help Me?

Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure that can help to create a more aesthetically pleasing and healthier smile. During this treatment, a dentist removes excess gum tissue and sometimes bone from around your upper front teeth, helping to expose more of the tooth structure.

When Might I Need Crown Lengthening?

We might suggest a crown lengthening procedure if you have a tooth that requires restoration but has broken off near the gum line. Sometimes, not enough tooth is exposed to support a crown or filling, and uncovering more of the tooth allows us to restore the tooth properly. Crown lengthening treatments can also help people who have what’s called a “gummy smile”, and this is a problem where they show quite a bit of gum tissue when they smile or talk. Ideally, you should only show a minimal amount of gum tissue, and your gums should be nicely shaped, creating an aesthetically pleasing frame for your teeth.

What to Expect?

We use local anaesthetic during crown lengthening to ensure you feel comfortable and our dentist will carefully reshape your gum tissues and the surrounding bone if necessary. Sometimes we only need to remove a tiny amount of tissue to create a more desirable shape or to place a filling or crown.
