03 May Invisalign 101: Straighten Your Teeth without Braces
Would you love a straighter smile but hate the idea of wearing traditional braces? Invisalign could be your best solution.
What Is Invisalign?
Instead of using fixed metal brackets, wires and elastics, Invisalign straightens your teeth nearly invisibly using clear aligners. The aligners are made from a very thin plastic material and are custom-designed to fit tightly over your teeth. The aligners use advanced technologies to gently apply the correct pressure on each tooth, gradually moving them into positions predetermined in your treatment plan.
Who Can Have Invisalign?
Initially, you will need an appointment with our Invisalign dentist to check you are suitable for treatment. Invisalign is designed to correct a wide range of orthodontic problems, including underbites, overbites, crossbites, and teeth rotated or out of alignment. Some people who seek Invisalign treatment will have worn braces during childhood but have seen their teeth shift with age. Invisalign isn’t always suitable for correcting more complex orthodontic problems as occasionally fixed braces can provide more precise tooth movements.
What Is the Process for Having Invisalign?
After determining you are suitable for treatment, we will need to take photographs, x-rays and a 3-D scan of your teeth. Proprietary software is then used to create your treatment plan. Your treatment plan will show how your teeth will move and the predicted outcome, producing virtual images that you will be able to view. It’s a great way to see the effectiveness of Invisalign before you even wear your first set of aligners.
Once you are happy with the treatment plan, your custom aligners are created, and we will show you how to insert and remove them and how to take care of them. You need to wear each set of aligners for approximately two weeks before discarding them and moving on to the next set. Ideally, the aligners must remain in place all of the time, so you will only remove them when you want to eat or drink anything other than water and for regular brushing and flossing. Good compliance is essential for treatment success, and the aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours each day. Treatment continues in this way until your teeth are beautifully straight.
Advantages of Choosing Invisalign
Invisalign is a popular system because it is so easy to use and you do not need to change your oral care routine, and there are no food restrictions. You only need to remove the aligners for mealtimes, and you can brush and floss your teeth normally. Once the aligners are in your mouth, they are virtually invisible, although you may see a slight halo effect around your teeth. Invisalign treatment is popular worldwide and produces predictable results.
How Long is Treatment?
Most adults will complete Invisalign treatment within a year, although more cosmetically oriented problems affecting only the front teeth may only take a matter of months to straighten. More complex problems may take longer than a year.
